NOVEMBER PLAYWRITING CHALLENGE

November 11: Chloe Golightly

Inspiration Line: “The most pathetic words a human can take start with…”

SCENE

(Our setting is a cafe table dining out doors somewhere on the upper east side of New  York. CHLOE and MIDGE sit having brunch. They sit with their cell phones)

CHLOE

I told you it is DARK in these streets.

MIDGE

He’s not that bad.

CHLOE

Not that bad look at his taste in movies. He lists 20 different moves…every one of them have Mel Gibson. In them.

MIDGE

Mel Gibon had some hits back in the day.

CHLOE

…Passion of the Christ was listed more than once.

MIDGE

Yeah that’s probably a red flag. But I maintain we will find you one of the last remaining normal guys in New York City.

CHLOE

Were there ever any normal guys? This is Woody Allen’s home tur=7 . He’s a hometown hero…need I say more?

MIDGE

I think calling Woody Allen anyone’s hero in the year 2025 is a bit over the top.

CHLOE

(She clears her throat and hands her phone to Midge)

MIDGE

Oh my God this man’s handle is @21stcenturywoody. I guess we can simply hope he was not referring to Woody Allen…Woody Harrelson? Maybe he chops down wood or likes to talk like a middle schooler about his boner?! WE CAN HOPE RIGHT?!

CHLOE

Hope is the only  thing you can hang your hat on these days. Maybe my real mistake was believing that romance and a partner is something I actually need to complete me. The most pathetic words a human can start with are “Do you take this man” or “Do you take this woman?” People take take take and they never give give give the same. Maybe Holly Golightly was right.

MIDGE

You’re not going to compare yourself to her again are you?

CHLOE

She has it all right.

MIDGE

Don’t you mean Truman Capote has it all right, and that would be wrong he was a troubled, troubled little man with a terrible alcohol dependency.

CHLOE

The quintessential New Yorker!

MIDGE

You got me there.

CHLOE

I think I’m just born to live Holly’s way of life.

MIDGE

But even she settled down and gave the cat a name eventually.

CHLOE

She didn’t in the book.

I would describe my style and attitude as…

A cross between Iris Apfel, Miriam Margoles, Lucille Ball. But I am a devoted maximalist through and through. Although, as another inspiration once said

Style—all who have it share one thing: originality.
