NOVEMBER PLAYWRITING CHALLENGE

November 28:

PROMPT: HOW DO THE GHOSTS OF MEMORY, GOOD AND BAD, MANIFEST THEMSELVES ONSTAGE?

(The setting is a bedroom in a house. The house looks in disarray like it’s in the midst of being cleared out.)

CAROL

I don’t understand where all this stuff came from.

LAUREN

Mom, you’ve lived in this house for 30 years, you’ve accumulated a lot of stuff. There’s nothing wrong with that. Ooo look at these shoes.

CAROL

I used to dance all night at Studio 54 in those shoes.

LAUREN

I’ve seen that movie!

CAROL

Oh God. Thank you for coming and help me clean out the house. I know it’s hard to see us sell the place you grew up in but it’s time. Your dad and I need to downsize, to go somewhere we don’t have to worry about “weather” or at least have svelt men be the ones to shovel it.

LAUREN

I understand, it still makes me sad.

CAROL

Oh look here, my wedding dress!

LAUREN

Let me see!

CAROL

Oh my goodness was I skinny or what.

LAUREN

The waist is tiny!

CAROL

I dieted for months to fit into that dress.

LAUREN

The sleeves are so puffy!

CAROL

Do you want it?

LAUREN

Me?

CAROL

You’re my only daughter, don’t you want to wear it someday.

LAUREN

Mom, I’m honored but I don’t know.

CAROL

Just take it and you’ll grow into the idea.

LAUREN

I’ll never grow into the idea of wearing a white dress in the outside chance that I ever get married. Mom I told you I’m gay.

CAROL

I know what you told me but you don’t know where the years will take you.

LAUREN

I don’t think the years will take me into the arms of a man.

CAROL

I just think you should keep an open mind and keep the dress.

I would describe my style and attitude as…

A cross between Iris Apfel, Miriam Margoles, Lucille Ball. But I am a devoted maximalist through and through. Although, as another inspiration once said

Style—all who have it share one thing: originality.

Diana Vreeland
